Crossovers seem the new golden goose for automakers everywhere. In America over 4 million crossovers were sold last year. This is a market that seems to be exploding in the auto industry. BMW exploded in the SUV scene with the X5 back in 1999. The X5 gave birth to the X line in BMW. The BMW X1 is the smallest crossover offered from the German automaker and can be considered as their entry level SUV.
During the 2008 Paris Motor Show, a concept of the X1 was unveiled. Later, in the Frankfurt Motor Show of 2011 the X1 was officially unveiled. It was based on the BMW 3-serries sedan.
The Current Model
Currently, the X1 is on its second generation (F48), which was unveiled in the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. The new model is totally redesigned and is completely redone. It features more room for cargo and passengers, and better performance. However, with this introduction the S-Drive line was removed from the United States market and the X-Drive28i is the only trim that is able there. It’s key to note that the X-Drive28i is known as the X-Drive25i elsewhere in the world.
The X1 comes in two trims the S-Drive and X-Drive. S-Drive is configured for front wheel drive, while the X-Drive is available as an all-wheel drive.
Here are the available trims:
- sDrive18i Auto
- sDrive20i Auto
- xDrive20i Auto
- xDrive25i Auto
- sDrive18d Auto
- xDrive25d Auto
The models that finish off with an “i” are those that are petrol engine based, while those that finish with a “d” are diesel engine based.
A set of diesel and petrol engines power the BMW X5. The most powerful petrol engine is the one which is fitted in the xDrive25i. the engine is a 2.0L turbo four that churns out 228 hp, while producing 350 N·m. With this power the X1 is able to take a class leading 0-100 km/h sprint of 6.5 seconds. As for the top diesel engine it belongs to the xDrive25d, which has power of 228 hp. The engine produces more torque as compared to its petrol alternative with 450 Nm. However accelerating from 0-100 km/h is slower at 6.6 seconds. As for transmission the X1 uses an 8-speed auto which has a manual shifting mode.
Inside the cabin, BMW have really done a top job. You get class leading headroom and luggage room, French-stitched leather and matte chrome. As for technology you’ll be happy with the standard 6.5” dashtop display screen or the optional 8.8” display. Adding $1350 you’ll be able to enjoy a double panel sunroof.
It doesn’t look all that different from its predecessor to be frank. However, if the question is if it looks great than the answer is yes. It looks really awesome especially with its new grille.
No matter which car a German automaker makes it seems it’s always bound to be a success. BMW have managed to transfer the efficiency and performance of their sedans onto their SUVs rather successfully. This is by far the class leader in the compact crossover market. Being at the top of a category where you are competing with the likes of Mercedes, Land Rover and Audi speaks volumes. A great car with all the luxury and comfort you’ll ever need.
If you are thinking of buying a BMW X1, you’ll have to start budgeting from $ 35,795.
Do you think that the X1 is the best small luxury crossover or are cars like the Audi Q3 or Lexus NX much better? Have your say, leave a comment.
