Ironically, Germans are known to be the best when it comes to efficiency, however in light of VW’s debacle, notions may have changed. Skandal! That’s German for “scandal!” and considering the resignation of VW’s Martin Winterkon, these are truly dark days for the German automaker. Well, with global warming and world leaders trying out a more vigorous approach to bring emissions down this couldn’t come at a worse time for VW.
It all started with the Environment Protection Agency’s (EPA) letter which was released on September 18, 2015. The letter claimed that the German automaker had installed software in the electronic module of some of its models, which could sense when it is being tested for emissions. After sensing this, the software would proceed to enter the Electronic Control Module (ECM) in to clean mode. This software is now known as the “defeat device.”
