Diamler is the maker of the best car in the world to some in the auto world. However, even the best of us have faults here and there. The Mercedes Benz SLK is a compact luxury roadster and it’s for those who like the wind in their hair. Personally, I am not a big fun of roadsters, but hey I don’t mind Tom Cruise sunglass wearing wannabes having their fun. I won’t judge, however my main issue with this models is they are too tiny I like big things.
What’s In a Name?
Well, this particular roadster seems to have borrowed the script from the SL. By the way SL stands for sportlich, which is German for “Sport Light.” Now the SLK seems to be a watered down version for half the price of a SL. The car has gone through three generations so far. The current generation is the R172, which was released in 2011. The R173 which is scheduled for release next year will be the fourth generation and will have its name switched to SLC. The “C” will be shipped in from the C-Class models, where the car will be the convertible model of the class.
There are eight variants of the SLK:
• SLK 200
• SLK 200 (2.0)
• SLK 250
• SLK 250 CDI
• SLK 250d
• SLK 300
• SLK 350
• SLK 55 AMG
Now each of this models are powered by either 1.8 L I4, 2.0 L I4, 2.1 L I4 diesel, 3.5 L V6 and 5.5 L V8. All the I4 engines are turbocharged. However, a common complaint of these engines is that their turbo takes a long time to get that kick. For purists they will appreciate the 6-speed manual option available on the I4 engines. A comment on the manual is that shifting through gears is easy enough, however the engine acts rather reluctantly. The other transmission options are all automatics 7-speed or 9-speed.
The least powerful engine belongs to the Mercedes Benz SLK 200 which is the 1.8 L I4 turbocharged engine. The car takes 0-100 km/h in 7.1 seconds. The top speed for this engine is at 149 mph. Also, this car is not available in the US and Canada.
Now Mercedes AMG acts like rival BMW M. Where they create the standout car in any model. Now wherever you see the AMG marque plastered on an engine you can be sure to expect high performance. The Mercedes Benz SLK 55 AMG is the crown of the jewel for the SLK class. It spots a 5.5 L V8 engine that produces 415 hp. It goes 0-100 km/h in a paltry 4.1 seconds that’s 1.1 seconds longer from being considered a supercar.
The cabin looks decent enough, but sounds disastrously. You’ll hear the engine, turbo, fellow motorists and background noises. Thus, if you are trying to sample a Beethoven symphony or listen to an audiobook you’ll be majorly disappointed. Well back to the good news, you have leather upholstery and aluminium trim to start you off. I like the brush aluminium pedals they really look awesome by the way. A panorama roof is available to get the sun but not the tan.
You can expect 18” 5-spoke rims and LED daytime running lamps. The most striking thing about the exterior has to be the retractable roof, which Diamler claims to retract in under 20 seconds.
If you want a little more bling or bounce, you can go for packages such as Sports Appearance and Premium 2.
Prices start at £34,715.
