Tesla has been grabbing all the headlines with the incredible range of electric cars they offer. However, when it comes to sales the Nissan Leaf surpasses the Model S. Tesla is not your traditional automaker as they are a Silicon Valley company that started this millennia and they have been quite disruptive to the auto industry. As for Nissan well it’s an established affordable brand in the auto business. Nissan seems to be leading the way for traditional automakers to adopt electric cars. The Nissan Leaf is the bestselling electric car with 200,000 units sold by December 2015.
What’s In a Name?
The Nissan Leaf is also known as “LEAF” which is a backronym for Leading Environmentally-friendly Affordable Family car.
Nissan Altra was the first battery electric vehicle that Nissan ever made. It was unveiled in the 1997 Los Angeles International Auto Show. Production began in 1998 -2002 where a paltry 200 vehicles were made. Fast forward 13 years later and the LEAF was born with a couple of concepts and projects in between. The LEAF as a compact 5-door electric hatchback made its debut in December 2010 in Japan and the US. Later in 2011 the car was unveiled in Europe and Canada.
The Leaf offers a variety of three to pick from:
The S is the base model, while the SL features the most amenities of the three.
Powering the Leaf is either a 24kWh or 30kWh lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. The 24 kWh battery gives you an 84 mile range while the 30 kWh gives you 107 mile range. Churning out 107 hp is an 80 kW AC synchronous motor.
The cabin is spacious and will have everyone seated well. For cabin amenities in this class you probably won’t find a car that’s as well laden. A heated steering wheel comes standard and so do heated seats. Other features include hands free texting, Bluetooth phone connectivity and navigation.
The design team at Nissan worked hard to make sure that the Leaf has a modern contemporary look. They based their design on a sedan and a hatchback and morphed the two together. Considering this is a low performance category of cars the exterior styling is what sells the units here.
The car is a lot cheaper than most of its competitors and yet offers value for money. As it will give all the necessary amenities you need with a subtle driving experience. To reaffirm this, the Nissan Leaf has received numerous awards like the 2011 European Car of the Year and 2011 World Car of the Year. It will be interesting to see if Tesla’s Model 3 will be able to usurp the Leaf in sales. This is a great car that not only is convenient for your ride, but also you get to keep our environment clean.
The Nissan Leaf starts at a modest $ 29,010.
